Monkey problem in India. Someone please Speak !

That's it. I have to speak about it somehow and try to convince the people of the magnitude of the problem we are in. I have been fed up countless number of times and been troubled a good number of times because of this menace.

They  look like so innocent things, creatures with their little babies hanging down their bellies and looking into each other's eyes with all the love they can think of. That is enough for anyone to make them love these little creatures. Not to forget that they look almost like humans, behave intelligently and respond to emotions and express their frustration just like how humans do. Which is exactly the problem I think is with these creatures. As far as my family is concerned they crossed their lines for too long and are too aggressive.

I did notice this change. My town, Medak, stays by a little mountain that has a little hill fort on the top of the mountain which is now replaced by a Mosque. But mountains are the birth places for Monkeys, they are home for Monkeys. Hence, it is natural to find them along the settlements that bank on the edges of mountains or hills like my home town. I am not new to Monkeys, I've encountered them right from my childhood. But, they never were severe offenders in the sense that, a normal man could so easily scare them with a stone or a stick, like we do with a normal street dog. But these creatures have gone out of hand.

We have a mango tree in our front yard, of which we haven't eaten a single fruit before ripening because they never reach ripening because of these monkeys. One summer a few years ago, I was very determined to protect the tree against monkeys and other invaders (Including Humans), that I was ready to attack or scare/warn anyone who would try to steal my fruits. One day a BIG band of monkeys came and I scared a lot of them away. There was one big monkey that was on the opposite building that was staring at my actions and trying to warn me instead. I got angry and flew a stone at it. It escaped and so I turned my back on it and started walking back into my home. It came running towards me all of a sudden and pounced on me. I shit my pants, and I started running. Monkey bite can be dangerous, and can lead to a lot of Medical expenditure. Luckily while I was running, my mom noticed something wrong though I didn't shout for help. I kept running and fighting, but I was dumbstruck with the monkey's action. It finally grab hold of my leg and try to pierce my skin with its nails, but luckily I managed to get inside courtesy of my mom's quick actions calling me in after her suspicion.

It remembered me for next two days, and whenever it came to visit my home it started getting excited and plunge into 'attack' mode, that I didn't go out for next one week. My apartment Neighbor got bitten by a group of Monkeys and it took nearly 3K INR to treat him. One more person in our locality was attacked, after an attack on milkman, who needed to be rushed to the metro for more serious treatment and was reportedly admitted into ICU. Hearing all this, I was angrier than ever.

Then I got interested in animal behavior and the theories of animal behavior. I studied some material on it, watched some documentaries and read some articles about how to interact with monkeys. I understood that Monkeys seem to have evolved, like humans have, very recently. I was astonished. I finally understood that Monkeys, especially the monkeys that I am encountering everyday don't trust human beings. It turns out that Langmuir trust humans and are friend with humans. I remember giving some bananas to Langmuir and none of them attacked me if I didn't give it to them. It is because of lack of trust between Humans and Monkeys that is causing the havoc. What is the reason, I didn't understand. I was told that it was a natural reason, like a Goose not trusting a dog with its eggs, or a cat not trusting dog with her kittens. Its not even maternal thing, it is simply the inter species enmity, I guess.

Whatever might it be, their havoc continues, with people continuously complaining but none of them taking action. why ? Because they have a sentimental side related to Hinduism. Meanwhile I continue to see these poor creatures subjected all kinds of abuse and violence, both by human and nonhuman factors. I have seen more amputated and affected monkeys than I have seen humans. The matter got very serious and it went to the Chief Minister of the state, who simply replied " We have displaced them form their home. We should provide them homes so they could return back to wild. Their home is trees so plant more trees". I understand his motive, but how long will we have to suffer for that. After these years of being accustomed to this kind of food gathering/stealing and human interaction are they ready to go into jungle ? Or better are they willing to go into jungle ? Sharing space with them in the same neighborhood looks more and more nightmarish than sharing with a snake colony. Atleast snakes are scared of Humans, these creatures aren't.

Read this article here, where Govt filed the case against offenders who tried to kill monkeys that are wreaking havoc. So, after reading I suspended my plans to capture them myself and handle it over to the municipal authorities since they don't seem to have taken this issue seriously. I have a lot more to say on this, but not now. Until then, Bye.
